Mike Coy Personal Training

Q and A

My Biography:

I have been involved in health and fitness all of my life, from playing sports as a kid to staying in shape as an adult to make me more productive at work. I have been training friends and family for over ten years for a variety of fitness goals from weight loss, strength training and enhanced sports performances.

This inspired me to pursure fitness as a career and become AFAA certified as a professional personal trainer.

I am married with two children, Wayatt and Jacey. We live on my wife Erin's family farm in Lewisberry, PA where we have lots of pets.

What is the value in hiring a Personal Trainer, and why should I utilize a trainer instead of going to a local gym?

1. Commitment - Not only do you get a rock-solid commitment from a trainer but just as important is the commitment that you make to YOURSELF. If you pay hard-earned money for something, your likelihood of making good use of that purchase increases dramatically. Don't wait another day to make a commitment to yourself and your future!

2. A full fitness consultation and exercise program - In order to know how to get where you are going, you have to have a realistic idea of where you are right now, as well as a detailed set of goals that you want to achieve from your personal training sessions. During your fitness consultation as well continually during your training, your personal trainer will evaluate your status, and set up and maintain your workout program for you. All you have to do is be willing to work hard!

3. The training itself - There are so many facets to health and fitness training, that it's hard to even put together a brief list of the high points. Look at the Fitness/Nutrition section of any bookstore or library and see how many books you find on nutrition, exercise, and health in general. The job of your personal trainer is teach you everything you need to know about nutrition, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle, while at the same time explaining away the bogus myths about miracle weight loss and exercise programs.

4. The equipment - Although you are encouraged to get your own fitness equipment to keep at home, if you do not want to spend the money, or don't have room for it at home, a home personal trainer will bring everything to you that you will need during that exercise session. This is especially helpful for people in the beginning who doesn't want to buy fitness equipment until they are able to see the benefit of it first hand.

5. Full-time access to your personal trainer - As you start to get involved in a healthier lifestyle, you will come up with questions along the way, or need professional advice on various situations. As a veteran in the industry, your personal trainer either has all of the answers that you could possibly need, or knows where to find them. You will have an email address and a telephone number to reach your personal trainer as often as you need to so that you can stay on track with your fitness and personal goals.

6. Encouragement/Guidance/Motivation - Let's face it, if you had the motivation and/or knowledge to work out on your own, you would be doing it already, and wouldn't be reading this web site right now. People need help, and there is no shame in seeking a competent professional when that time come. When your car is broken, you take it to a garage to get fixed. When you are sick, you go see the doctor. When you want to make positive health and fitness changes in your lifestyle that will literally last you forever, you see a fitness professional! It's that professional's job to make sure you receive timely encouragement, instruction, and motivation to keep you on track.

7. And finally, you get a one-on-one confidant to journey with you from where you are now, to where you want to be. A personal trainer should get to KNOW YOU - that's the "personal" part of the job description. How can a trainer help you attain your goals if he/she doesn't know about the motivating and de-motivating factors in your life? How can sessions be fun and exciting if your trainer doesn't stay in tune with your personality, or if they have no clue about you as a person? You are considering hiring a professional to walk with you on a journey that might last awhile, depending on your goals and your needs. Take advantage of having a skilled and PERSONAL companion on the way!

Is group personal training an option?

If you and your workout partner(s) would like to have training sessions at the same time, there is discount for each of you as long as you continue to train together. You can have up to 4 people in a session. You get to split the cost of the sessions with your training partners, giving yourself a substanial discount.

What if I just want to talk to a Personal Trainer about getting started, but don't know if I am actually ready to hire a trainer?

As many people aren't sure in the beginning about the many details that are involved in changing to a healthier lifestyle, we offer a Fitness Consulting service to help you get started. This is a great opportunity for an individual to spend some time with a personal trainer to learn the basics of exercise, nutrition, and other aspects of the fitness lifestyle before deciding whether or not to hire a trainer. For some people, this is enough information to get them started down their path, and for some people, this is just the first step. Either way, having a fitness consultation allows you to make an informed decision about how to proceed with your health and fitness goals.

Why Should I utilize a personal trainer instead of going to a local gym and working with one of their trainers?

This is a very reasonable question to ask, and there are many ways that personal training far outweighs the service that you will get at most fitness facilities. In addition to the items listed above, the following items further show the value of working with a personal trainer who doesn't work for a gym:

  • No Gym Memberships - If you have no interest in working out at a local facility, why should you have to pay for a gym membership?
  • No Sales Quotas - Personal Training is founded on the concept of helping people attain their fitness and lifestyle goals, NOT on hitting a certain sales figure each month. Did you know that almost every gym personal trainer has a certain sales quota to reach each month?
  • No Driving Time - Since your trainer will be coming to your home or community workout area, you do not need to drive to the gym, stow your gear in a locker, workout, and then drive home. That alone will save you 45 to 60 minutes every single day!
  • Unlimited Correspondence - When you train with a personal trainer, you are both welcome and encouraged to contact our staff as many times as is needed to keep you on track with your fitness goals. Try getting that type of time and attention from most gym trainers, and you will quickly see the value in working with an organization that cares about YOUR needs.
  • Nutritional Counseling - There are as many facets to a nutrition program as there are training principles that you should stick to during your goal attainment. You need a trainer who is both knowledgeable about your nutritional needs, as well as available to work with you throughout your training program to keep you on track.
  • Group Personal Training Discount - You may or may not be able to engage in Group Personal Training in most gyms. However, even if you are able to do so, you will NOT get a discount for it. We offer a discount off your training program if you workout with a partner or a group of partners.

As I travel to see all of my clients, my availability to train is quite literally governed by WHERE my clients live. My base of operations is in Mechanicsburg, so obviously a client in Harrisburg is going to be more of a time commitment than someone closer to Mechanicsburg. For that reason, the baseline price for training depends on where you live.
